Fear by Alida Bustos

As we get closer to our days of volunteering, my sense of fear and nervousness increases. Fear, not because I have not worked in this type of law before, but fear that I will be unable to help someone. This project is important for so many reasons and most do not have anything to do with me directly. It’s important because it’s inhumane to have people that are searching for a better life for themselves and their family in detention centers. It’s important because we might save some people from the continuing abuse and violence that they have experienced in his or her country of origin. It’s important because the people in Karnes and other detention centers are important – all humans are equal and they are all important.

I am expecting this experience to be eye-open ing. Even though I am a minority in the sense that I am a woman who is also a person of color, I have been privileged in my life and know that I have not experienced anything close to what these refugees and other asylum seekers have gone through. I expect to grow not only as a law student but as a person as well. I know this experience will be difficult from an emotional standpoint but at the end, the reward of having gone though it will be so much greater.
