Students, under the supervision of Prof. Lauren Gilbert, will be traveling to Lumpkin, Georgia in August, before the fall semester starts. The team will be partnering with the Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative in assisting immigrant detainees at the Stewart Detention Center. On-the-ground volunteer opportunities allow for law students to be involved in all aspects of advocacy, including intakes and client meetings, legal research and drafting, document collection, coordinating community letters of support, and any other needs that arise on any given day. As has happened with previous trips to Karnes, it will be a transformative experience for students, will help them to strengthen their skills and at the same time, will allow them to assist one of the most vulnerable populations in the American detention system. We are proud of having put together a diverse and committed team of students, that will continue the inspiring tradition of the previous Karnes Pro Bono Projects.
